Small folio (9 1/2 x 6 3/8 in.; 241 x 162 mm). Engraved architectural title by William Holke, woodcut head-and tailpieces, decorative woodcut initials, with the blank leaf Cc4; lacking leaf Dd2 ("rarely present" Pforzheimer), few leaves with lower right corner renewed, notes by various collectors on recto of initial blank and verso of final blank. Full vellum, morocco lettering-piece on spine; spine soiled, lettering-piece chipped.

Catalogue Note

First edition of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 12th books, the other books having already appeared in 1598. The "rarely present"leaf Dd2 contains a sonnet to Lady Wrothe and another to the Countess of Montgomery. Scarce. Only one other copy has appeared at auction in the last fifty years, the Robert Pirie copy (sold Sotheby's New York, 2 December 2015, lot 153).
