Condition
Good condition overall with superficial surface dirt, especially to the crevices, and minor chips to the edges of the marble, consistent with age and handling. The marble appears to be quite grey with some natural veining and inclusions. The crescent moon with the lower end restored with two fine fissures visible. The marble Diana set onto a polychrome marble column with alabaster base and capital. The column with natural inclusions a few minor chips to the edges and scratches. The index of Diana's proper right hand as well as the top of the crescent moon may have been slightly retouched.

Catalogue Note
Séraphin Denécheau, élève de David d'Angers (1788-1856), exposa régulièrement au Salon à partir de 1859. Portraitiste réputé, il s'illustra également dans les sujets mythologiques et allégoriques. Il fut à plusieurs reprises commissionné par l'Etat français, notamment pour les décors du musée du Louvre, de l'Opéra et de la Gare du Nord. Par ailleurs, ses oeuvres sont également présentes dans de nombreuses églises parisiennes.
