Condition

Very fine modelling of the terracotta. Remains of paint and surface dirt in the crevices. His proper right arm appears to have been reattached. His left arm and wing are missing. A few minor lacks and chips at several places.

Catalogue Note

La représentation d'un ange accroupi, parfois en prière, est un sujet récurrent de la sculpture romaine après Gianlorenzo Bernini. Grand nombre de ses bozzetti d'anges en terre cuite ont été conservés, dont celui du groupe de Sainte Thérèse en Extase de l'église Santa Maria della Vittoria (musée de l'Ermitage, Saint-Pétersbourg, inv. n° 619) ou ceux des anges du retable du Saint Sacrement de la basilique Saint-Pierre (vers 1672, Harvard Art Museum/Fogg Museum, Cambridge, inv. n° 1937.62 et inv. n° 1937.64).
L'auteur de ce bozzetto est donc à situer dans l'entourage du Bernin, autour de sculpteurs tels qu'Ercole Ferrata (1610-1690). Un bozzetto de l'Ange avec la Croix réalisé par Ferrata pour le Pont Saint-Ange (musée de l'Ermitage, Saint-Pétersbourg, inv. n° 623) présente certaines similitudes avec notre terre cuite.
