Catalogue Note

Cadell was greatly interested in the local architecture of the island of Iona, from the magnificent Romanesque Abbey to the humble white-washed crofts that punctuated the rocky landscape. The present picture depicts Auchabhaich Croft, close to Bishop’s Walk and between two outcrops of rock (the cottage is still extant). It was depicted on several occasions by Cadell in both oil and in watercolour. Here he has placed rugged sheep in the foreground for scale and in the background is the tower of the ancient Iona Abbey and the Ross of Mull beyond beneath a steely-grey sky. It was painted in 1914, during one of Cadell’s earliest trips to the island and was likely painted en plein air.
