Work unframed. Faint horizontal scratch of ca.1 cm near the lower right corner (also visible without UV-light). Minor circular abrasion near the lower left edge (to the bottom of the stove). Very faint, hardly distinguishable traces of humidity visible near the centre of the left edge and to the centre of the tiles above the stove where cardboard is slightly brownish. Under UV-light some retouchtings visible along the edges, on the figure's skirt, in aforementioned horizontal scratch near the lower right corner and on the right foot of the 2nd chair to the right. A further circular retouching visible under uv-light in the green ca. 5 cm to the right of the figure and a further three minor retouchings in the upper right quadrant. Very good condition. Werk ausgerahmt. Feiner, horizontaler Kratzer von ca. 1 cm Länge bei unterer, rechter Ecke (auch ohne UV-Licht sichtbar). Kleinster, runder Abrieb an der unteren linken Kante (unterhalb des Ofens). Sehr schwache, kaum sichtbare Spuren von Feuchtigkeit in der Mitte der linken Kante und in der Mitte der Fliesen oberhalb des Ofens, ist der Karton leicht bräunlich verfärbt. Unter UV-Licht sind einige Retuschen sichtbar entlang der Kanten, auf dem Rock der Figur, in dem zuvor genannten horizontalen Kratzer in der unteren rechten Ecke und im rechten Fuss des zweiten Stuhles von rechts. Eine weitere, runde Retusche ist in der grünen Farbe ca. 5 cm rechts von der Figur unter UV-Licht sichtbar und weitere drei winzige Retuschen im oberen rechten Quadranten. Sehr guter Zustand.

Im Sommer 1892 besuchte Félix Vallotton gemeinsam mit Hélène Chatenay seinen polnischen Malerfreund Félix Jasinski in Ballancourt unweit von Paris im Französischen Departement Seine-et-Oise. Jasinski hatte Vallotton gebeten, ihn gegen ein Honorar bei der Bearbeitung einer grossformatigen Grafik nach dem Gemälde „Die Konstitution des 3. Mai 1791“ vom Maler Matejko künstlerisch zu unterstützen, welche Jasinski im Auftrag der „Gesellschaft der Freunde der Schönen Künste Krakau“ zu fertigen hatte. Während dieses Aufenthaltes entstand auch unser bezauberndes Bildnis von Hélène beim Kochen. Das kleine Gemälde ist mit höchster Sorgfalt gemalt und Liebe zum Detail gestaltet. Die feine Textur des Gewandes der jungen Köchin sowie die Lichtreflexe auf den Kupferkesseln und -töpfen wirken naturnah und stehen in der Tradition des realistischen Interieurs des 19. Jahrhunderts. Der Realismus der Darstellung ist durch eine feine emotionale Komponente erweitert, durch welche der verliebte Blick des Malers auf seine damalige Freundin Hélène förmlich spürbar wird. Unser Bild zählt zu den frühen und eindrücklichen Innenraumbildern von Félix Vallotton.      

In the summer of 1892, Félix Vallotton and Hélène Chatenay visited his Polish friend, the painter Félix Jasinski in Ballancourt, in the French region of Seine-et-Oise not far from Paris. Jasinski commissioned Vallotton to work with him on a project he was completing for the "Gesellschaft der Freunde der Schönen Künste Krakau" – a large-scale reproduction of the painting  “The Constitution of 3 May 1791” by the painter Matejko. Our charming painting of Hélène cooking was also completed during this stay. The small portrait is painted with great care and composed with love and attention to detail. The delicate texture of the young woman’s garment, as well as the light reflected off the copper pots and kettles appear naturalistic and are in line with the realist tradition of the 19^th century. Beyond the realism in the interior scene being shown, the work carries emotional significance: through the perspective of the enamored painter who depicts Hélène, his girlfriend at the time, his love for her becomes tangible. The present work represents an impressive early interior painting by Félix Vallotton.
