Fritz Glarner

Der Kreis stellt für Fritz Glarner die potenteste Form dar: in sich geschlossen und gleichzeitig auf alle Seiten offen, introvertiert und zugleich extrovertiert. Mit insgesamt 63 Werken wurde das Tondo Leitthema in Glarner’s Oeuvre. Die Form des Kreises diente ihm sowohl als Motiv als auch als raumstrukturierendes Element. Als weiteres Bezugssystem zur räumlichen Orientierung benutzte Glarner das vertikal und horizontal ausgerichtete Gitterraster. Die Keilformen dienten ihm dabei einerseits zur Flächenaufteilung, andererseits funktionieren sie als eigenständige Bestandteile der Komposition. Zudem erzeugen ihre schrägen Linien Spannung und Dynamik.

Die Begegnung mit Piet Mondrian, einem der Begründer von „de Stijl“ und einer der federführenden Figuren des internationalen Konstruktivismus, wies Glarner den Weg zu seinen „Relational Paintings“ und „Tondos“. Diese waren gekennzeichnet von einer rein geometrischen Bildsprache, die auf harmonischen Formen beruht und die in den für Glarner typischen Primärfarben gehalten ist. „Relational Paintings“ nannte Glarner diese Werke, weil bei ihnen alles im Bezug und in Harmonie zueinander komponiert ist. Es entstehen zweidimensionale Bilder, welche auch ein starkes Raumgefühl evozieren. Bei unserem Gemälde handelt es sich um ein selten schönes und qualitätsvolles Werk des Künstlers.



In the eyes of Fritz Glarner, the circle represents the most potent form: self-contained and open at the same time, both introverted as well as extroverted. With a total of 63 works, the Tondo became the guiding theme in Glarner's oeuvre. The form of the circle served both as a motif as well as an element structuring the space. As a further reference system, Glarner made use of vertically and horizontally aligned grids. On the one hand, the wedge shapes serve as a divider of areas and surfaces, on the other hand they function as an element of the composition in their own right. Additonnally, the oblique lines create tensions and dynamism.



The painter’s encounter with Piet Mondrian, co-founder of "de Stijl" and one of the leading figures of international Constructivism, paved Glarner’s way to his "Relational Paintings" and "Tondos": purely geometric compositions based on harmonious shapes, typically painted in primary colours. Glarner named the works "Relational Paintings", as everything is designed so as to relate to, and be harmonious with the whole. Two-dimensional images emerge, at the same time evoking a strong sense of space. Our painting is an exquisitely beautiful work by the artist of the highest order.
