The pines and rough rocks steeply descending to the sea are typical of the coastline close to Varengeville. Félix Vallotton and his family spent the summer of 1904 in this wildly beautiful region of Normandy, together with Pierre Bonnard and his girlfriend Marthe. Vallotton frequently rode his bicycle along the coast to find inspiration in these picturesque settings. During his rides he would capture drawings in his sketchbook, later reworking them in his studio to create charming paintings in the tradition of "Paysages composés". One such painting is the summer landscape presented here.
