Félix Vallotton

Eine im Bild offenstehende Tür im Châlet Les Sapins in Montbarry (Gruyère) gewährt den Blick durch einen schmalen Verbindungsgang in einen dahinterliegenden hellen Wohnraum. In diesem Raum ist die damals dreizehnjährige Stieftochter des Malers, Madeleine, dargestellt auf einem Stuhl sitzend vor einem Tisch vertieft in die Lektüre ihrer Hausaufgaben.
Die Bildkomposition ist in horizontalen und vertikalen Linien aufgebaut bis hin zu dem vertikal gestreiften Tuch auf dem Tisch. Die vielfältigen mit Blumenmotiven gemusterten Stoffe des Wohnraumes wie die Vorhänge, das Kleid der jungen Frau und der auf dem Boden ausgelegte Teppich bilden einen spannungsvollen Kontrast zum streng strukturierten Vordergrund des Bildes.
Nachdem Félix Vallotton 1899 die geschiedene Gabrielle Rodrigues-Henriques geheiratet hatte, die vermögende Tochter des Pariser Galeristen Alexandre Bernheim, strahlten seine Interieurdarstellungen vermehrt eine versöhnliche und friedliche Atmosphäre aus. Die Gemälde, die Vallotton in den ersten Jahren nach 1900 schuf, sind durch die damalige Pariser Avantgardekunst geprägt durch die Werke der Künstlergruppe der Nabis. Die Arbeiten jener Zeit zählen zu den herausragenden Bildfindungen dieses berühmten Schweizer Malers.

In the painting, an open door in the Châlet Les Sapins in Montbarry (Gruyère) provides a view through a narrow passageway into a bright living room. In this room, the then thirteen-year-old stepdaughter of the painter, Madeleine, is shown sitting on a chair at the table, reading her homework. The composition of the painting is constructed in horizontal and vertical lines, down to the vertically striped cloth on the table. The living room's various patterned fabrics with floral motifs, the curtain, the young woman's dress and the carpet on the floor form an intense contrast to the rigidly structured foreground of the painting.



After Félix Vallotton married the divorcee Gabrielle Rodrigues-Henriques in 1899, daughter of the wealthy Parisian gallery owner Alexandre Bernheim, his depictions of interiors increasingly gave the impression of a conciliatory and peaceful atmosphere. The paintings Vallotton created in the first years after 1900 are characterized by the influence of the former Parisian avant-garde art, through the works of artists of the Nabis group. His output from that period ranks among the most outstanding work attributed to this famous Swiss artist.
