Giovanni Giacometti's fascination with colour and its effects as well as the intensive study of oil and tempera painting connected him throughout his life with his artist friend Cuno Amiet. In the present work, the pure colours applied with strong, assured brushstrokes marry most beautifully with the motif of the Engadiner woman bent over the water trough and the simple surroundings of the alpine mountains. The painter gives the unspectacular act of quenching one‘s thirst on a hot summer day his full attention. With this painting, Giovanni Giacometti succeeds in creating a masterpiece of Swiss Post-Impressionism: filled with light and shade, richly atmospheric. The heat of the sun and the fresh mountain air are almost palpable.
