Félix Vallotton

Bei der Erstellung des Oeuvrekataloges von Félix Vallotton im Jahr 2005 war der Standort unseres Bildes Eglise Sainte-Anne à Cagnes noch unbekannt. Die beiden Autorinnen des Werkkataloges hatten lediglich Kenntnis dieses Werkes aufgrund einer kleinen Bleistiftzeichnung. Das vorliegende Original, mit seiner wunderbar malerisch ausgereiften Szenerie, stammt aus einer bedeutenden Privatsammlung und gibt die Atmosphäre eines Sommerabends aufs Schönste wieder, mit Blick auf das französische Mittelmeerstädtchen Cagnes und die Kirche der Heiligen Anna. Die lichterfüllten und beschatteten Partien im Gemälde bilden ein spannungsvolles Nebeneinander von hell und dunkel. Die stilisierten Schatten evozieren etwas Unergründliches und Geheimnisvolles. Das Bildthema mit Lichtphänomenen und mysteriösen Schattenbildern kennzeichnet eine Reihe von südlichen Landschaftsbildern Vallottons. Der Maler schrieb einmal dazu: «Ce pays est abondant et multiple, l'aspect en change perpétuellement, il me semble qu'on pourrait travailler ici des années». Die Faszination an dieser Landschaft veranlasste Félix Vallotton und seine Frau Gabrielle ab 1920 regelmässig dorthin zu fahren.

At the time of drawing up the catalogue raisonné documenting the known works of Félix Vallotton in 2005, the location of the painting Eglise Sainte-Anne à Cagnes was still unknown. The two authors of the catalogue only had knowledge of this painting through a small pencil drawing. This original, with its wonderfully picturesque scenery, comes from an important private collection and beautifully reproduces the atmosphere of a summer evening, with a familiar view of the French Mediterranean city of Cagnes and the Church of Sainte-Anne. The light-filled and shaded areas of the painting form an intriguing juxtaposition of light and dark. The stylized shadows suggest something inscrutable and enigmatic. This motif, featuring effects of the light and mysterious silhouettes, is characteristic of Vallotton’s Southern landscapes. The painter once wrote: «Ce pays est abondant et multiple, l'aspect en change perpétuellement, il me semble qu'on pourrait travailler ici des années». His fascination with this landscape led Félix Vallotton and his wife Gabrielle to visit regularly this area from 1920 onwards.
