Condition

Some typical minor glaze abrasions and chipping along the edges at the rim and footrim as well as some minor glaze crazing and scratches to the enamels overall. There is a 3/4-inch chip to the underside of the rim (between 1 and 2 o'clock). There is an approximate 3/4-inch long area by the end of his hair on the left, possibly whee the stilt mark would have been, and where the glaze has not taken giving it an appearance of a flat chip. Otherwise in generally good condition.

Catalogue Note

Dutch delft polychrome royal portrait chargers of William III of this period generally include half-length portraits of the king within wide stylized floral borders. The present example with the composition, color palette and borders mimicking sgraffito appear to be rare. A very similar charger with the same border and possibly painted by the same hand, inscribed PWD 3, was sold at Christie's London, February 5, 1979, lot 69.
