Catalogue Note

Polk was born in Annapolis, Maryland, he was orphaned at age ten – at which time he moved to Philadelphia to live and work with his uncle Charles Willson Peale. As an artist, the principal source of his income was made from making copies of original paintings of historic personages, including fifty copies of his uncle’s George Washington.

The face in the present example shows a close affinity to Charles Willson Peale’s style. Polk’s fluid and rich rendering of the sitter’s yellow vest establishes a gentle colorful focal point for the portrait.
