  • With frame 6 1/2 in. by 6 3/4 in.
One depicting a bird, the other a leopard, worked long and short stitch, couching and other stitches, in later giltwood frames.

Condition

Please note that these have not been examined out of frame. Frames have losses to gilding and extensive wear. Fading to colors but overall in good condition. Some fraying to edges where pieces were cut. Very minor losses.

Catalogue Note

Many mirrors from the second half of the seventeenth century had roundels similar to these in the corners. The roundels often featured birds, leopards, lions, or stags, which indicates that these fragments were most likely originally part of a needlework surround for a mirror.
