Catalogue Note

This splendid rendition of the arms of Foxcroft nestling within a colorful garden, and without the customary mantling found on the majority of Boston's embroidered arms. It is possible the shield and crest were derived from a seal that lacked mantling. Another unusual Boston embroidery of c. 1740-1760  features the arms of Foxcroft and Coney on  black silk, surrounded by lush flowering vines and gilded eagles rather than the typical mantling. See Betty Ring, Girlhood Embroidery: American Samplers & Pictorial Needlework, 1650-1850, vol. I (New York: A.A. Knopf, 1993), p. 64.
