Paper label on base inscribed and dated Captain Philip Worth, Commander of Houghton, Indiaman, 1729, both on later ebonized stands.

Condition

Both figures with scattered chips and cracks, cracks are particularly pronounced along the neck of the female figure. The figures have numerous areas with overpaint and consolidation to lifting and lost pigment.

Catalogue Note

The published record of 1896 of the East India Company and also the logbook if the S.S. Houghton show that Captain Worth set out from Deptford in the Houghton for the East in Spetember, 1728 arriving in Guangzhou in July 1729. The ship set sail for its return journey to England in January 1730. Captain Worth is recorded making two more voyages on the Houghton in  1735 and 1739.
