Description

  • silk, linen, wool, and parcel-gilt wood
  • With frame 14 1/2 in. by 12 1/4 in.
Seemingly depicting King James II and Queen Mary of Modena with symbols of the Union including the fleur-de-lys of France, the Harp of Ireland, the Thistle of Scotland and the Tudor Rose of England, with the cypher IR  for 'Iacobus Rex' above his crown, worked in cross, tent and other stitches, in a later parcel-gilt and ebonized frame.

Condition

Please note that this needlepoint has not been examined out of frame. Frame has some rubbing and wear to ebonized decoration and gilding. Some dark browns have oxidized to reveal foundation beneath. Blues and reds are still generally strong. Some losses to stitched decoration with the French knots to his cloak slightly coming undone.
