Catalogue Note
The Battle of Porto Bello, on the isthmus of Panama. was fought between British and Spanish naval forces as an extension of the War of Austrian Succession and in an effort by the British to disrupt Spanish fleets carrying New World treasure to Spain. The attack was mounted with a small fleet of warships by Vice Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) on November 20, 1739, taking the Spanish garrison by surprise and overwhelming his opposition. Following his victory at Porto Bello, Vernon successfully attacked Fort Lorenzo, the Spanish fortifications at the mouth of the Chargres River, further disrupting Spanish shipping. His victories caused great celebrations in both Britain, where a variety of souvenirs were produced commemorating the events, and also in America, where George Washington's future estate was named after the Admiral by Lawrence Washington, the first President's elder half-brother who had served under Vernon.
