Description

  • ENAMEL, GOLD
Enameled with a skull surrounded by acanthus foliage and flower heads, inscribed within "T Gittins ob 18 Mar 1743/4 AE 61," marked inside.

Provenance

Sotheby's, New York, May 22, 2003, lot 665 (part).

Exhibited

Museum of Mourning Art, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.

Literature

Jeannine J. Falino, in Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers, does not show an initial mark for Ephraim Cobb; however, she speculates that a pair of gold buttons, reported lost in the Boston Evening-Post of 22 December, 1746, engraved with the letters RG and having a maker's mark EC, may have been Cobb's work (p. 292).
