Catalogue Note

Following George Washington's death on December 14, 1799, large number of commemorative prints circulated in the country. The present example, and the other transfer-printed jugs in this sale, represent many of these designs honoring the Washington and were produced for the American market. The source and the interpretation of the design for the present jug is discussed in S. Robert Teitelman et al, Success to America, Creamware for the American Market, p. 84, as the engraving by John James Barralet in 1800 and published in Simon Chaudron and Barralet in Philadelphia and a jug with a similar print on one side is illustrated ibid, p. 85, cat. no. 12. Another jug with the 'Washington Apotheosis' design is illustrated in Robert H. McCauley, Liverpool Transfer Designs on Anglo-American Pottery, pl. XXV, fig. 64A.
