chased with formal foliage on a stippled ground, the base inscribed in Old Slavonic 'Serafim the Hieromonk' and dated 1710, apparently unmarked

Condition

The niello worn. The foot of the base slightly bent. The interior and rim with small and scattered nicks and scratches consistent with age and use.

There were two well-known hieromonks called Serafim in the late 17th and early early 18th centuries, both of whom were Greek, one from the island of Thasos and the other from the island of Lesbos.
