Condition

Original canvas. There are frame abrasions with associated paint loss along all four edges. There is an area of paint shrinkage and craquelure in the lower right. There are several flecks of paint loss. The surface is covered in a layer of dirt with spots in places. Inspection under UV light reveals minor retouching to all four corners. Held in a gold and silver coloured frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Sofia Beklemisheva was born in 1873 into a family of artists. Her brother Vladimir Alexandrovich Beklemishev (1861-1919) was a renowned sculptor and rector of the sculpture department at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Beklemisheva is known to have studied in the studio of Ilya Repin from 1897 onwards and exhibited with the Independent Artist Association between 1910 and 1915.
