Condition

Original canvas which is slightly slack on its stretcher.There are frame abrasions with associated paint loss at the edges and faint stretcher bar marks in places. There is a vertical tear approximately 3cm in length in the lower right and a small indented scratch with paint loss to the right of the sitter's shoulder. There are small punctures to the centre of the top edge, the centre of the left and in the lower right. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouching to the edges. Held in a gold and silver leaf frame with plaster mouldings. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

The only daughter and youngest child of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, son of Emperor Alexander II of Russia, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna married Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark at Tsarskoe Selo in 1902. Nicholas' mother, Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinova, was the daughter of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, a son of Nicholas I of Russia.

Flameng was well known in Russia and his paintings were popular among members of the Imperial family. His painting Bathing of Court Ladies in the 18th Century was acquired by Alexander III and is now in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, which owns a number of his works, including a portrait of Empress Maria Fedorovna from 1894.
