Catalogue Note

A student of Kazimir Malevich in Vitebsk and member of UNOVIS, Evgenia Magaril moved to Petrograd in 1922, where she studied under Mikhail Matiushin. The majority of her pre-war works were lost during the Siege of Leningrad. Accused of formalism, she was excluded from the Union of Artists in 1952.

The present work was included in the artist’s only solo exhibition which took place in Leningrad in 1984. In archival photographs it can be seen hanging above Portrait of a Boy, which is now in the State Russian Museum and dates from the 1920s. Landscape with Goats is thought to date from the same period.
