Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what appears to be the artist's original, keyed wooden stretcher. This is providing an even and stable structural support. A splinter of wood is missing from one of the mortice and tenon joins on the reverse of the stretcher. This appears stable. Paint Surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There are several small areas of fine lines of craquelure, most notably within the upper right quadrant of the sky. These are stable and are not visually distracting. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows retouchings in the extreme corners of the composition, a few small spots of retouching within the centre of the water, a few very small spots and lines of retouching within the foliage and the water above the centre of the lower edge, and a few further small spots and lines on the extreme edges of the composition. Other very small spots and lines of retouching are also visible. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition.
