This rug has gentle muted colouring. Flexible handle. Soft lustrous wool, pile at highest 3mm down to knotheads with minor areas down to foundation visible in horizontal lines due to old folds. There are some scattered areas of re-piling, for example centre right of left hand border, visible as lighter shade of ivory, and other small areas in differing colours throughout. Some minor oxidisation to browns within the field and border. Top end with madder flatweave and original soumac knotting, lower end with flatweave warp fringing , not overlocked, some losses and cobbled repairs in sections. The lower end is of irregular shape, as visible from the photograph.
This is a beautifully drawn vibrant rug and a good example of its type, reasonably priced.

Catalogue Note
The 'Pinwheel' Kazak group offers little variation in the field design, which is likely inspired by 17th century Dragon carpets; however few examples are known and so are highly sought after for this, and for their striking, archaic beauty. A similar example is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (accession no. 22.100.18), published in McMullan, J., Islamic Carpets, 1965, pl. 53, pp. 204 & 205. For a discussion on the group see Gsell, H., 'Some Thoughts on the Swastika Kazak', Hali, Vol. 3, no. 3, 1981, pp. 192 - 195.
