of irregular conical form rising to a flaring rim, the exterior carved in varying levels of relief with verdant pine and wutong trees, several pavilions rendered set amidst the dense vegetation, the wood smoothly patinated to a variegated warm reddish-brown colour
Condition
The top right section of the rim has been broken off and restored. There are typical age cracks and other minor bruises and surface wear.

Catalogue Note
Chenxiangmu cups of this form, carved in imitation of rhinoceros horn, are characterised as being made of separate sections of wood joined together, as this precious material was commonly found in small pieces. It was also, along with sandalwood, used as incense and was probably imported in small chunks for that purpose.
