modelled in the form of a large lotus pod with fifteen seeds supported on openwork meandering stems issuing furled lotus leaves to the base and sides of the pod, the curling stems issuing an attendant small lotus pod to the side, the stone of a translucent white colour accentuated with small patches of russet skin to the leaves and petals, wood stand

Collection of Lady Patricia Ramsay (1886-1974).

Condition

The carving is in overall good condition with just expected minute bruises and nicks to the fragile extremities, including one shallow nick measuring approx. 1 cm to the edge of one leaf. Small areas have possibly been polished down to conceal earlier nicks.

Catalogue Note

The current piece is skillfully modelled in the round as lotus seedpods encircled by flowers and leaves, which represent fertility and speedy arrival of sons. Compare a jade carving of lotus pods similarly depicted with seeds exposed, illustrated in René-Yvon Lefebvre d’Argencé, Chinese Jades in the Avery Brundage Collection, Tokyo, 1977, pl. LI; another included in the Min Chiu Society exhibition Chinese Jade Carving, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1983, cat. no. 193; a third sold in our New York rooms, 12th September 2012, lot 297; and a further carving sold in our London rooms, 7th June 1994, lot 121.
