Catalogue Note

Immaculately finished to a smooth buff surface, the present cup is notable for the colouration of the stone, which is almost half grey and half white. The dark striations in the stone are significant because of the yin yang symbolism associated with such colouring. Compare a bowl carved from a similar stone, with a Qianlong mark and of the period, included in the exhibition In Scholar’s Taste. Documentary Chinese Works of Art, Sydney L. Moss, London, 1983, cat. no. 121, where the author notes "in the material of ‘dragon’s seed’ this formation would be considered extraordinarily auspicious" (see p. 182).
