Catalogue Note

Townshend begins to conceive the soundtrack for the Tommy film adaptation

While the present track listing follows the basic album sequence. With numerous notes in Townshend's hand regarding which songs represent the stages of Tommy's life, with additional notes on the dream sequences from the film and their specific timing.

Of special note here is deletion of the Sonny Boy Williamson cover, the appropriate "Eyesight to the Blind" which was of course played so memorably by Eric Clapton in the Ken Russell film.

"I’m often described as ‘pretentious’ for attempting to write a composed song-cycle that tells a story (which itself has been torn to pieces a thousand times because it doesn’t fit established rules of operatic written drama). ... We knew that what we were doing owed more to British music hall than to grand opera." (Pete Townshend)
