The painting has been relined. Under UV light, large repaints are visible in the sky, especially one important repaint above the boats in the middle on the left. Some dirt spots are visible in the lower part of the composition; along with scattered repaints on the composition. Some repaints are visible alongside the borders. Craquelures are visible on the surface - some were flattened by the relining of the canvas.

Ce combat naval eut lieu le 13 juillet 1795, au large de la presqu’île de Giens sur la côte méditerranéenne française, entre la flotte française commandée par Pierre Martin et les flottes anglaise et napolitaine sous les ordres de William Hotham. Même s’il s'est soldé par une défaite française, ce n’est qu’un épisode de la lutte victorieuse menée par la France contre le reste de l’Europe.
Le pays sous le régime de la Convention thermidorienne, traversait alors une période très difficile après l’achèvement de la Terreur et la chute de Robespierre, et dut faire face à de nombreux conflits militaires, aux difficultés économiques et aux insurrections populaires.
