Condition

To the naked eye : The work is in a poor overall condition. It is painted on a perfectly flat copper plate. The pictorial matter is lifted in the light blue parts. Major loss in Saint Joseph's right arm, in his collar and in his left hand. In the missing parts, the underdrawing is visible. There are also losses in the yellow drapery, on the right. The painting is under a dirty varnish. Under the U .V. light : The U.V. light reveals a uniform green varnish. There are some small thin restorations in Saint Joseph's mouth and eyes. The condition report was made on September 1st, 2016 at the Mr. de Balkany's Hôtel Particulier Rue de Varenne and the painting will be shipped to Sotheby's galleries before the exhibit and the sale.
