Condition
Dial in good condition. 18th century cartel d'alcove movement has been fitted to this much later 18th century-style case. Movement appears to be complete but would benefit from a clean and service.

Ce cartel reproduit celui conservé au Detroit Institute of Arts (fig. 1 ; cf. H. Ottomeyer, P. Proschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p. 115, fig. 2.5.5).
Jacques Caffieri (1678-1755) fut l'un des plus grands bronziers de l'époque rocaille. Son atelier était situé rue des Canettes. Nommé fondeur-ciseleur des Bâtiments du roi, il travailla dès 1736 pour la Couronne et fournit notamment la caisse de la célèbre pendule astronomique de Passement et Dauthiau (Versailles), ainsi que les lustres de Madame de Pompadour (Bibliothèque de l'Institut), les montures de la commode de Gaudreaus pour la chambre de Louis XV à Versailles ou encore les deux lustres offerts par le roi à sa fille, Madame Infante, duchesse de Parme (ces trois dernières oeuvres conservées à la Wallace Collection). Son fils Philippe devint son associé à partir de 1747.
