Condition
Dial in good condition, hour and minute hands repaired and could be improved. Movement is complete and looks as though it would run but may benefit from a clean and service, bell replaced. The case in generally good condition, some rubbing and marking to the gilding, patination rubbed. As said the lamp held by the figure on the left is missing.

Catalogue Note
Publiée par Christian Baulez, cette pendule correspond au modèle livré par Rémond à Daguerre le 9 décembre 1786, au prix de 1 300 livres. C'est à l'occasion de la livraison d'un second exemplaire en octobre 1787 que les figures sont décrites comme "la Vigilance, l'Etude et le petit Apollon". Rémond réutilisait en fait les allégories modelées par Boizot pour couronner le secrétaire exécuté par Roentgen et lui-même en 1785 et destiné à Catherine II (conservé au musée de l'Ermitage à Saint-Pétersbourg). Ne se contentant pas d'un simple réemploi, Rémond modifia légèrement la Vigilance en supprimant ses ailes et compléta harmonieusement la composition en y ajoutant au sommet un charmant Apollon enfant.
De même, la frise de putti astronomes et géomètres, également modelée par Boizot et dont Rémond sous-traita la ciselure à Damerat, se retrouve sur des bas-reliefs ornant certains meubles de Roentgen, comme sur un autre secrétaire livré à la Grande Catherine (EPR-5089, musée de l'Ermitage, Saint-Pétersbourg) ou celui visible aujourd'hui au musée J. Paul Getty à Los Angeles (72.DA.47).
Remacle-Nicolas Sotiau, reçu maître horloger en 1782, fut le principal horloger de Daguerre jusqu'à sa mort en 1791 (cf. C. Baulez, op. cit. , p. 300, n. 55).
