le cadran du XVIIIe siècle : la plaque est peinte d’une scène mouvante de sept bateaux naviguant sur mer et entrant dans un estuaire, la côte avec personnages, berger avec son troupeau, au premier plan des cavaliers traversant un pont ; l’échelle des heures est placée en bas au centre, flanquée de deux obélisques en laiton doré semblables, mais pas identiques, à ceux utilisés dans l’horloge de Charles Clay (supra n°) et comme dans cette dernière on retrouve les figures d’Apollon (à gauche) et de Diane (à droite) à côté de ces obélisques ; au premier plan se trouvent les figures, en haut-relief mais ici en bronze doré, des allégories représentant les sept arts libéraux aussi employées dans les horloges de Clay ;
l'important mouvement à ressort (postérieur), composé de quatre trains de rouage, a probablement été construit exprès pour ce cadran ; platines rectangulaires, celle de l’arrière gravée de feuillage symétrique, échappement à ancre, balancier simple, suspension à ressort, sonnerie sur gongs, musique sur un carillon de huit timbres;
le cabinet et la gaine, réalisés dans le style du XVIIIe siècle en placage de noyer et bronze doré et ciselé, peuvent être datés du troisième quart du XIXe siècle

Condition
Dial is in generally good condition with old restoration to the painted scene. 19th century fusee movement is very dirty and not running, the srping to the automaton train is broken and the fusee chain is detached, it will require complete service and overhaul. The 19th century case in 18th century style is in generally good condition, the brass moulding to the plinth door is loose, there is some minor damage to the arched moulding of the case and other old scuffs, dents, marks and minor cracks throughout.

Catalogue Note
Suite au décès de Charles Clay, sa dernière grande œuvre, Le Temple des quatre grands monarques du monde, a été terminée par John Pyke (c. 1696-1762). Il semble que Pyke et son fils George (mort vers 1779) disposaient des moules de Clay pour les figures d’Apollon, Diane, les arts libéraux et les obélisques qu’ils utilisent dans plusieurs pièces de leur propre production. Ainsi, il est tout à fait possible que des pièces détachées venant de leur atelier existaient toujours au milieu du XIXe siècle pour être employées dans l’horloge ici présentée.
