Provenance

Ancienne collection de Charles de Beistegui (1895-1970), dans son hôtel rue de Constantine à Paris.

Condition

Good condition overall with minor wear to the patina and surface dirt consistent with age and handling. The dark brown patinated bronze heads with a heavy layer of wax. A few minor chips to the edges of the marble draperies : a few chips and lacks to the proper right lower edge of the drapery of the younger l'Emperor's Septime Severe. Another few chips to the drapery at his proper right shoulder of the older, the greek Philosopher Carnéade. Both marble busts have a metallic fixing hook visible on the reverse. A restored break to the marble foot of the philosopher's bust. Both busts are placed on marble columns, sold separately, lot 232. Please note that the sitters have been identified as the emperor Septime Sévère (the younger one), and the greek philosopher Carnéade (for the Elder).

Ces deux bustes, ainsi que les colonnes qui suivent au présent catalogue, figurent sur une aquarelle d'Alexandre Serebriakoff (1907-1994), représentant l'un des salons de l'hôtel de Charles de Beistegui rue de Constantine, à Paris.
