Condition

Good condition overall with minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. Remain of black lacquer visible in the crevices. Minor casting flaws at several places. Minor scratches and chips to the edges of the marble base consistent with age and handling. Very decorative bronze.

Catalogue Note

Le thème de l'Ecorché, que ce soit celui décrivant l'anatomie du cheval ou celle du corps humain, est une création de la Renaissance, en adéquation avec les préoccupations scientifiques de l'époque. Le modèle de ce cheval écorché est probablement le bronze du XVIe siècle, connu sous le nom de Cavallo Mattei, mentionné en 1703 dans la collection Mattei à Rome, et conservé au Palazzo Vecchio. Les bronziers romains Luigi Valadier (1726-1785) et son élève Francesco Righetti (1749-1815) réalisent des reductions en bronze du modèle destinés à l'usage privé de collectionneurs avertis. Ainsi figure en 1795 dans le catalogue des bronzes de Righetti 'un Cheval écorché de Mattei' pour 20 séquins Romains'...(cf. F. Haskell/N.Penny, op.cit. p. 370).
