Condition

The illustration is accurate, good overall condition despite the inevitable dents, scratches and marks due to the age and use. Constructions are firm and sound a few chips and some wear to the gilding through out, the gilding is also dusty at the top of the backs some traces of old an inactive woodworm some of them have been refiled with gold, one shrinkage crack, some losses due to woodworm due to the age of the top of the back, a few losses to the moulding of the back, one vertical shrinkage crack on the back of two armchair, a flower is missing of three seat rails Upholstery in good condition Please note that this condition report was made on August 31th 2016 inside Robert de Balkany's hôtel rue de Varenne; this lot will be shipped to Sotheby's galleries before the exhibit and the sale

Catalogue Note

L’hôtel Landolfo-Carcano (actuellement le siège de l’ambassade du Qatar) se situe à Paris, 1 rue de Tilsitt et donne sur la place de l’Étoile. Construit en 1858 par Rohault de Fleury, il doit son nom à sa propriétaire, Adèle Cassin, qui devint marquise de Landolfo-Carcano en 1889. Elle quitta Paris en 1912 et ce départ donna lieu à une vente dispersant l'importante collection de tableaux, meubles et objets d'art réunis par elle et son époux.
Le palais Corsini à Rome conserve un fauteuil présentant des éléments de construction et d'ornementation comparables à ceux de nos sièges (cf. E. Colle, Il Mobile Impero in Italia, Milan, 1998, p. 86).
