Condition

Very good condition overall with minor wear to the patina and some minor dirt in the crevices consistent with age and handling. A joint and a plug visible to Dejanira's proper right and proper left arms. The surface of the bronze has been waxed. Minor oxidation to the gilt bronze base consistent with age and handling. Very decorative and impressive bronze.

Catalogue Note

Un bronze de ce modèle par Adriaen de Vries, provenant probablement des collections de Rudolph II de Prague, se trouve au musée du Louvre (inv. n° OA 5424); trois autres exemplaires fondus vers 1845-55 par Charles Crozatier (1795-1855) sont conservés au Rijksmuseum (inv. n° BK-1957-2), au Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art de Kansas City (inv. n° 44-53) et au Baldisches Landesmuseum de Karlsruhe (inv. n° 66/100).
Victor Paillard (1805-1886), fut l'élève de Jean-François Denière, puis le collaborateur de Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892). Connu comme l'un des plus talentueux bronziers de son temps, il ouvrit vers 1830 une maison d'objets d'art et d'ameublement. Parmi les nombreuses commandes officielles qu'il honnora, il participa notamment aux décors du palais des Affaires Étrangères, quai d'Orsay.
