Condition

The illustration is accurate, good overall condition despite the inevitable dents, scratches and marks due to the age and use. The gilding has been gently cleaned, a restored chip on the enamel dial on figure 6 and a restored chip with a minor loss to the enamel dial of figure twelve. The tortoiseshell; marquetry has been restored as expected a few brass filets are lifting Some chips to gilding of the female figure especially on the feet, The gilding of the female figure has been refreshed, both arms and hands of the female figure have been restored it comes with a pendulum and a rewind key but the key to open the front glass door is missing The varnish of the top of the stand is extensively cracked it can be easily replaced. Very nice and rare model Please note that this condition report was made on August 31th 2016 inside Robert de Balkany's hôtel rue de Varenne; this lot will be shipped to Sotheby's galleries before the exhibit and the sale

Catalogue Note

Antoine Gaudron, horloger reçu maître en 1675

Le modèle de cette pendule reposant sur des sphinges est reproduit sur une gravure figurant dans les Albums Maciet (fig. 1 ; musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris).

Quant à la gaine, on retrouve un exemple similaire comprenant une caryatide en façade sur une planche de Jean Bérain (fig. 2 ; cf. L'oeuvre de Bérain, ornemaniste du roy, Paris, Editions Vial, 2011, p. 106).

Une pendule et sa gaine extrêmement proches des nôtres sont passées en vente à Londres chez Sotheby's.

Cette pendule apparaît sur une aquarelle de Jeffrey Bailey figurant la chambre de Monsieur rue de Varenne, qui sera présentée en vente dans les sessions suivantes (fig. 3).
