A ‘CIZHOU’ CARVED ‘FLORAL’ BOWL SONG DYNASTY

Description

  • stoneware
with rounded sides supported on a short knife-pared foot, the interior freely carved with a floral spray with combed petals and leaves, all within a line border, covered overall with a creamy glaze falling short of the foot revealing the buff mottled body

Condition

A few sections of the mouthrim have been slightly discoloured. The foot has a shallow chip of approx. 0.9 cm, an adjacent shallow flake, and a section which has possibly been slightly polished. Otherwise the bowl is in overall good condition, except for some expected firing imperfections, including some minor kiln specks, trapped and burst air bubbles to the interior.

A bowl decorated with similar combed design was excavated at the Cizhou kilns in Guantai, Henan province, illustrated in The Cizhou Kiln Site at Guantai, Beijing, 1997, pl. XII, no. 1; another is illustrated in Robert Schmidt, Chinesische Keramik, Frankfurt am Main, 1924, pl. 40a; and a fragment of a bowl recovered from Zibo in Shandong province, was included in the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition Kiln Sites of Ancient China, London, 1980, cat. no. 432.
