Description

  • Lee Friedlander
  • 'Knoxville'
  • gelatin silver print
signed, titled, dated, and annotated '79-6' in pencil and with the photographer's '44 South Mountain Road, New City, N. Y. 10956' credit/studio and copyright stamps on the reverse, 1971 (MoMA, pl. 231)

Condition

This early print, on double-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally excellent condition. Upon very close examination in raking light, the following are visible: an extremely faint, 6-inch linear impression in the center of the image, and a sharp crescent-shaped crease in the upper left quadrant. Neither of these appear to break the emulsion. There are 2 soft impressions in the left margin and some gray deposits of indeterminate nature in the upper margin. The margin edges and corners are gently rubbed. On the reverse, the upper paper-ply is folded back at the upper right corner. The copyright stamp is dated 1978.
