Description

  • Lewis Wickes Hine
  • Two Workers on a Girder, Empire State Building
  • gelatin silver print
oversized, warm-toned, annotated 'Photograph by Lewis W. Hine / Hastings-on-Hudson, NY' in ink on the reverse, circa 1930 (Men at Work, unpaginated)

Provenance

Originally from the collection of Allen H. Eaton, a trustee of New York's Ethical Culture School, and an employee of the Russell Sage Foundation, where Hine had an important exhibition of his photographs in 1929

Condition

This early, impressive, large-format print is on warm-toned, double-weight paper with a semi-glossy surface. It is in generally very good condition. The print is trimmed to the image. In raking light, the following are visible: faint soiling, superficial surface scratches, and scattered tiny matte deposits or abrasions overall. A series of short, diagonal creases at the upper right corner appear to break the emulsion. Two faint, parallel gray lines are visible upon very close examination in the sky area and in the upper left quadrant. There is faint discoloration along the extreme right edge, which corresponds to a tideline on the reverse. The reverse of the print is soiled and appropriately age-darkened at the edges.
