Condition
This green toned carbon print is in generally good condition. It is trimmed to the image along all edges except the right edge, where a thin strip of margin remains. Upon close examination, the following are visible: minor chipping along the upper edge; a small loss along the lower right edge, as is visible in the catalogue illustration; and a few small creases that appear to break the emulsion primarily in the upper portion of the image. The print is flush-mounted to board, and mounted again to modern board within the frame.
The accompanying letter is flush-mounted to board, and mounted again within the frame. Minor soiling and a horizontal fold are visible.

Catalogue Note
‘The Terra Nova was wonderfully picturesque as she lay berthed alongside the ice […] and with almost every changing aspect I felt constrained to get my camera bearing on a fresh impression of the old rover’ (The Great White South, p. 72).
Led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-13) was one of the earliest and most important polar exploration missions. Herbert Ponting spent more than a year with Captain Scott and his men at Cape Evans and made over 1,700 glass plate negatives during the expedition. The letter accompanying this lot details preparations for an earlier expedition led by Scott: the British National Antarctic Expedition (1901-04), commonly known as the Discovery Expedition.
