Condition

A detailed report for each cyanotype photogram is beyond the scope of this condition report; those wishing condition reports on individual specific plates are welcome to contact the Photographs Department. Grading these cyanotypes on a scale of 1 to 10—a 10 being a print with deep and vibrant blue tones and bright whites in the highlights—the prints rate a strong 10. The 102 cyanotypes range in tonality from deep Royal Blue to an exquisite Prussian Blue, and a high level of detail is visible throughout each and every photogram. This impressive album of cyanotype photograms is in excellent condition. Each cyanotype is on double-weight, textured 'J. Whatman 1846' paper, the watermark for which is visible on the reverse of a few plates. Nearly all plates remain untrimmed with the deckle edges visible. As is typical of hand-coated prints, brushstrokes are faintly visible and the extreme edges remain white in areas. Tiny pinholes are visible in each corner, likely the result of processing. Very minor darkening is visible at the edges and on the reverse of a select few of the prints. The prints are remarkably clean, with essentially no foxing visible. There is a soft waviness at the edges, consistent with the processing and binding. This album has been rebound in navy morocco with pale blue buckram boards, the spine is in compartments with raised bands gilt, and the volume is titled in gilt on the spine. The plates are stitched and the binding remains tight. There is minor wear at the extremities.
