Catalogue Note

Mylne came from a distinguished family of Edinburgh masons and the present lot is said to depict their family home. Mylne was in Rome between 1754 and 1759, whereupon he settled in London. The following year he achieved immediate success by winning a competition to design the new Blackfriars Bridge. He was to become popular as a designer of country houses, with particularly strong links with Scotland and Shropshire.

The present drawing was once part of the celebrated collection of Sir Albert Richardson, an important architect and architectural historian.
