This sheet is in good condition. The medium is well preserved and the paper is not laid down. There are one or two fox marks, but these are minor.

Catalogue Note

John Vardy began his career assisting William Kent. He was interested in both the classical and gothic styles and his skills were rewarded by several prestigious private house commissions. He was also a civil servant and held a number of important posts, including clerk of the works at the Queen's House, Greenwich, clerk of the works at Hampton Court (1745-6), at Whitehall, Westminster, and St James's (1746–54), and at Kensington (1754-61). In 1756 he was made clerk at Chelsea Hospital, and from 1749 to 1763 he was surveyor to the Royal Mint.
