Description

  • A tortoiseshell and papier mâché tobacco or powder box with laque burgauté ornament, German, first half 18th century
  • tortoiseshell, gilt metal
  • 11cm., 4 1/4 in. diameter
circular with domed lid, the lid lacquered and inlaid with mother of pearl and coloured gold paillons, in the manner associated with Johann Martin Heinrici, with panels of leaves and plants, the sides piqué with stripes and florets, the brass key and hinge plates cast with husk, shell and acanthus ornament

Condition

The lid has been cracked in several places and restored. There is a chip to the front rim above the opening. Understandably there are some paillon losses on the sides and a very few on the lid.

Boxes of this size, described as powder boxes,  were illustrated in Stalker and Parker's Treatise of japanning and varnishing, published in 1688 and widely distributed throughout Europe. The leaf decoration is also reminiscent of their examples.
