Description
- Pair of Lions Rampant
- gilt and polychromed pine
- North Italian, first half 18th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the lions is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface throughout. The gilding on the lions is worn throughout, revealing its red ground, and also a gesso layer underneath, at the high points. There are some areas of overpainting, particularly to the foliage, including the right toe of the front right paw of the lion facing to its right, which has been painted blue. There is some stable naturally occurring splitting to the wood, including around the lions' heads and around the base. The lions were carved in sections; joints are visible around the edges of the base, around the haunches of the lions, and near their shoulder and front paws. There is craquelure to the paint on the bases underneath the figures, with some losses.
