The quintessentially Italian form of a small wall or corner console on a single column found particular favour during the neoclassical period in the northern Italian centres of Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria.
Several examples of tables conceived in a similar vein to this pair are illustrated by Enrico Colle, op. cit., p. 392, and Alvar González-Palacios, op. cit., p. 303, fig. 353. The use of gilt neoclassical decoration on a pale blue ground was often employed on late 18th century Genoese carved furniture, especially ensembles of pier tables of mirrors examples illustrated by Colle, op. cit., no. 92, p. 392-93 and Alvar González-Palacios, op. cit., p. 312, fig. 365.
