Catalogue Note
The Palais Bourbon and the adjacent Hôtel de Lassay to the right were constructed on the Rive Gauche of the Seine between 1722 and 1728 for Louise-Françoise de Bourbon, legitimised daughter of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan and wife of the 6th Prince de Condé, a cousin to the King. The Palais was modified on several occasions throughout the 18th century, the edifice was confiscated from the 8th Prince de Condé by the Revolutionary governement in 1791 and became the seat of the legislative assembly of the Directory in 1795, later transformed into the Chambre des Députés during the Restoration and the Assemblée Nationale under the Third Republic.
Based on contemporary engravings, the south-westerly-facing view is taken from the Pont de la Concorde, and the distorted perspective makes Mansart’s late 17th century dome of the Invalides appear to the left (east) of the Palais Bourbon, when in fact it lies slightly west.
